Transforming Waste To Protein

the waste dilemma

Food waste is a global food system problem. Food waste is food materials produced for human consumption but left uneaten, damaged or disposed throughout the food supply chain, from farm to consumer. It is an organic waste discharged from various sources including food processing plants, and domestic or commercial kitchens, cafeterias and restaurants.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, reported that in 2015, approximately one third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. That amount is about 1.3 billion tonnes per year.

In Malaysia, statistics showed that the food waste had reached 15,000 tonnes daily in year 2015, that including 3,000 tonnes that was still fit for consumption. Generally, municipal solid waste in Malaysia consists of 50% of food waste, and 70% is disposed at landfill sites.

As available landfill space decreases and the cost of siting and building new landfill increases, the government struggled to develop alternative means to meet the demand of waste disposal.

Diverting food waste from landfills will not only conserve limited landfill space, but also help to reduce environmental problems.

BETSOL is in the position to take up this challenge by providing an eco-friendly nor natural method to solve nation’s food waste crisis.

Our service provided can ultimately reducing organic waste disposal into landfills, thus less pollution impact onto our environment and promote sustainability.

food security

It is estimated that agricultural production needs to grow nearly 70% globally, and by at least 100% in developing countries by 2050, to keep pace with the population growth. Therefore, to produce sufficient food for 2 billion people by 2050, a proactive approach is indeed in needs.

The idea of transforming organic waste with Black Soldier Fly Larvae to produce insect meal as a sustainable animal feed ingredient, and crop fertilizer has been proposed for nearly a half century. It has become a hot topic recently, as insect-based ingredients is valuable additions to livestock and fish diets. Insect protein companies are emerging everywhere around the world, initiating the very beginning of the insect-meal revolution.

BETSOL is to take up this opportunity to produce alternative feed, called insect meal, derived from Black Solider Fly Larvae. The live larvae are used as direct feed stock or can be further processed to be insect protein and functional feed.
